NEW CHAPTER

The second exhibition of Horton, "New Chapter," is an opportunity to reflect on how expanding diversity can open new horizons and demonstrate the progress of diversity and richness in an increasingly isolationist and dogmatic world. Moreover, it will be a time to ponder what kind of identity and meaning we, as individuals in this world, can present.

As the saying goes, "A bird fights to get out of the egg." Transitioning from one state to another is never as simple as it sounds. Anyone who wishes to be born must destroy one world, and in order to destroy that world, one must first perceive and be conscious of it. It is akin to something that does not exist unless intentionally sought.

In this context, the exhibition "New Chapter" represents a struggle to move toward a new chapter. The participating artists, Kim Ryeong-moon and Yoo Hwa-soo, perceive and become conscious of the world we live in through different forms, much like fraternal twins. Furthermore, they sensitively bring to light the sensory and cognitive blind spots that we might easily overlook, and model a new direction for advancing to the next chapter from these insights.

Kim Ryeong-moon focuses on sensing the subtle inner emotions that are not visible to the eye. He translates the stirring and flickering of forgotten emotions deep within the self into paper and canvas. By imbuing abstract sensations such as death, sadness, the heavy pain of life, the incomprehensible, tension, dissonance, sharp sounds, desolation, and disorder with rhythmic images, he creates a new space-time. This represents a struggle to bring forth the value of things that exist in an opaque and delicate state, breaking through to the outer world—a struggle toward a new chapter.

Yoo Hwa-soo, on the other hand, draws attention to entities and forms that had to be uprooted and severed due to the sacred, inviolable goal of technological advancement. He uses the life of non-utilitarian entities—such as weeds, moss, and mushrooms growing on dead trees—in the context of cutting-edge technological systems that regard utility as the measure of existence. In other words, he shines a light on the transient entities that exist without value because they are deemed useless. The boundary stones can be understood in a similar context. Used to distinguish between the road and sidewalk or in funeral customs to separate burial mounds from other areas, the utility of boundary stones serves as a protective fence for some, while simultaneously acting as a barrier or obstacle for others. In Yoo Hwa-soo’s work, the boundary between useful and useless is fused and grafted, depicting a new ecological vision that struggles toward a new chapter.

이번 Horton호튼의 두번째 전시는  다양성을 확장하는 것은 앞으로의 나아갈 지평을 열어주고 점점 고립주의와 독선적 오만함의 기운이 감도는 세계정세의 흐름 속에서 잊지 말아야 할 다양성과 풍요의 진보를 보여 줄 수 있을 것이라 생각한다. 더불어 세계에 던져인 한 인간으로서 어떠한 정체성과 의미를 보여줄 수 있을지 고민해보는 시간이 될 것이다.

‘새는 알에서 나오기 위해 투쟁한다’고 했던가? 한 상태에서 다른 상태로 이행한다는 것은 결코 말처럼 쉽게 이루어지는 것이 아니다. 누구든지 태어나려고 하는 자는 하나의 세계를 파괴해야 하고, 세계를 파괴하기 위해서는 그 세계를 감각하고 의식하는 것부터 선행되어야 한다. 일부러 찾지 않으면 존재하지 않는 것이나 마찬가지이기 때문이다. 

여기에 새로운 챕터로 나아가기 위한 투쟁을 하는 전시 «New Chapter»가 있다. 전시의 참여 작가인 김령문, 유화수는 이란성 쌍둥이처럼 각기 다른 형식으로 우리가 사는 세계를 감각하고 의식한다. 그리고 더 나아가 그들은 우리가 누락하기 쉬운 감각과 인식의 사각지대를 예민하게 끄집어내고, 이것으로부터 새로운 챕터로 나아가는 지류를 모델링한다.  

김령문은 눈에 보이지 않는 미묘한 내면의 감정을 감각하는 것에 집중한다. 내면 깊숙이 침잠되어 존재를 망각한 감정들의 꿈틀거림과 일렁임을 종이로, 캔버스로 옮긴다. 죽음, 슬픔, 삶의 무거운 고통, 이해되지 않는 일들, 긴장감, 불협화음, 날카로운 음, 스산함, 무질서 등 추상적으로 존재하는 막연한 감각들에 리드미컬한 이미지를 부여함으로써 새로운 시공간을 창조한다. 이것은 불투명하고 미세한 상태로 존재하는 것들, 다수의 것이 아닌 소수로서 존재하는 것의 가치가 바깥 세계로 뚫고 나오는 일 즉, 새로운 챕터로의 투쟁이다.

유화수는 과학기술 발전이라는 인류 공동의 신성불가침적 목표에 의해 뿌리 뽑히고, 잘려나가야만 했던 존재와 그 양식에 주목한다. 그는 효용성을 존재 가치로 간주하는 최첨단 과학기술 시스템을 잡초나 이끼, 죽은 나무에 자라난 버섯과 같은 효용성이 없는 존재들의 생명을 존속하는 데 이용한다. 다시 말해, 효용성이 없으면 존재가치도 없는, 존재하지만 존재하지 않는 임시존재들에 눈을 돌려 인식의 시각지대를 밝힌다. 경계석 역시 비슷한 맥락에서 읽을 수 있다. 인도와 차도의 경계를 구분하거나, 장례문화에서 봉분과 그 밖의 영역을 구분하는 데 이용되는 경계석의 효용성은 누군가에게는  안전한 울타리이지만, 동시에 누군가에게는 가로막는 턱이나 장애물이 될 수 있다는 점에서 이중적이다.  쓸모있는 것과 그렇지 않은 것의 경계는 유화수의 작업에서 서로 접합되고 이식되며 새로운 생태계의 도상을 투쟁적으로 펼쳐보이며, 새로운 챕터를 향해 나아간다.
