Artist Choi Eun-jeong graduated from the Department of Paintings, Incheon Catholic University, and the Department of Painting, Hongik University Graduate School, and completed the doctor’s course in Fine Arts at Hongik University Graduate School.
Last year, she held a private exhibition on the theme of “Subtle Scape” with the support of Shin Han Art Materials (Inc), and she had held a number of private exhibitions before.
She is a young new artist who participated major exhibitions including the ‘Korea Tomorrow 2016_ OUT+STANDING,’ which is held every year in an attempt to suggest a new direction to the Korea’s contemporary art market through new planning, ‘SOMA DRAWING_Mindful Mindless’ planned by Soma Museum, ‘Urban Gatherers’ planned by Space K, ‘Art Factory Project’ held at Culture Station Seoul 284, and ‘Pre-Drawing Biennale-Competition Exhibition_ Drawing, Birth of Thinking’ held at DMZ.
As for her major awards, she won the Grand Prize at the Ghasong Art Award sponsored by Dong Wha Parm (Ghasong Foundation) in 2016, was selected as Artist of the 36th JoongAng Fine Arts Prize sponsored by The JoongAng Ilbo in 2014, and was chosen as Selected Artist at a number of other major art awards. She was also selected as a Year 1 Artist of SOMA Drawing Center Archive by the Seoul Olympic Museum of Art (SOMA), which was opened in 2006.
While on the face of them, Artist Choi Eun-jeong’s works seem abstract and difficult to understand, their contents are made up of ‘hetero-ecotopia,’ her desired ideal space that is neither utopia nor dystopia. On the canvas, a variety of plants constitute key positions in a city, and form one giant organism.
Recently, she expands her ‘contemporary picturesque’ work into installations, by the use of modified canvas, object and lighting, focusing on painting.
